How To Make A LEGO Boardgame

A simple game where you take it in turns to roll a dice and move though the boardgame trying to avoid dangers to get to the treasure – like snakes and ladders!

Step 1: build a cool environment

Use the blocks you have, we did buy a baseplate for this build without it, it would fall apart, it also was useful to move the terrain to where you want to play

Step 2: add stepping stones to the treasure

The stepping stones are a different block to stand out they have a single stud on them.

The character has to follow the stepping stones- they can’t walk everywhere!

Step 3: add dangers

The stepping stones with a black circle are dangers, you won’t want to step on these otherwise you may be sent back a few squares!

Step 4: make characters

Build or reuse characters. It does not matter if they are mobs, anything works

Step 5: Rules

The aim of the game is to reach the treasure before the other player

Take it in turns to roll a dice and move along the path of squares with one stud, it you land on a black stud you have to roll to see if you avoid danger.

Each danger has different rolls to avoid going backwards

Here is an example if you land on the first danger, which is a jump over water:

  • roll a 4+ to save, go to next space
  • roll under a 4 go back 1 space

Which is a 50/50 chance of success. Here is a more frustrating example of trying to get past some wolves:

  • if you roll a 1 go back to the start of the game
  • roll a 5+ go ahead 1 space
  • roll any other number go back 1 space

We tried to balance fun and frustration and add variety to the game but still keeping it simple and down to the luck of the dice.

Step 6:playtest

It took around 3 minutes with two people, and with three people, it took 10 minutes, which is similar to Snakes & Ladders and I think is a good amount of time.

We had fun making and playing this game, I hope you do too!
